Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery

International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
