The Trump phenomenon's most telling and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to construct it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more gradually, across decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense about him because they identify as non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.
It is emphatically absolutely not the account of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for others, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your outer garment you should give him your sweater too.
The apparent and straightforward reality that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
So I have been inspired to see the determined opposition regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you welcome them and welcome him or not?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the finest within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most damaging of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both modesty and conviction, a blend that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
