The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
