Our Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

At first glance, this album could seem closer to a difficult scholarly examination than the latest popular music project from a musician whose last hit was a collaboration with an international pop star. Divided across four different parts and sung in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced album investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical change, often through the lens of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with raw honesty elsewhere—soars heavenward here, carried by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure daring alone renders the work of other artists look rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid dry academic posturing is nearly miraculous, and complete praise belonging to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, its stakes feel much greater here, and the balancing act far more pronounced. The element that really elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless want to be right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines brightly during the stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds down with comedic force. The song then segues into the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The charm of Lux is that the listener rarely exactly know—or even wish to predict—what you is going to next."

Almost each track ends in a completely distinct place from where it began. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing the artist's previous trap-infused style starts off moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Art and Accessibility

A key balancing act of the album is straddling the gap of bold innovation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy hits. One track sung entirely in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spins upward. That trick gets echoed by another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining layered tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of hidden treasure that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While other major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests at it, some tipsy on holy drink, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
