The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
